My Dad refinishes wooden items like this and it all depends on the type of damage, the type of wood, and the type of finish that the piece has. So does your clothes press have major or minor damage to it. If they are small they could be filled, sanded, and stained to match the original wood a satin varinish or polyurithane then would have to be applied to protect the piece.
